The Outreach Board informs and involves the Congregation in opportunities to carry out the world-wide mission of the Church. We involve the church locally, in the community, state, nation, and throughout the world by giving to offerings of the United Church of Christ and other agencies and by the participation of the Congregation in programs of study and action.
The Outreach Board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 – 8:30 PM in the church parlor. Meetings are typically not held in July and August.
2016 MISSION TRIP: In addition to supporting local organizations, we are very excited that an international mission trip is planned for February 27, 2016 – March 6, 2016. We will be traveling to the community of Ouanaminthe (wanna mint?), Haiti and will support the Haiti Cocina mission there. Click here to learn more.
Traditionally, the Outreach Board guides the church’s participation in and recruits volunteers for a number of local activities throughout the year. Please contact a member of Outreach (names listed below) if you would like more information about any of the volunteer activities described here or if you have a suggestion about an activity we could support.
Our church provides volunteers to staff the Bar Harbor Food Pantry in January and October. The Board has a representative to serve on the Bar Harbor Food Pantry Board of Directors. Our current representative is Andy Baron. Several members of our church also volunteer weekly at Serendipity, the thrift store that benefits the BHFP through the sales of new and nearly-new clothing, jewelry, and linens. Volunteers are always needed! Donations of thrift store items can be brought to Serendipity (next to the BH Fire Dept.) when the store is open (10-3 Weds through Sat; 10-6 on Thurs). Non-perishable food items are always appreciated. Food items may be left in the shopping cart in the narthex or placed in the BHFP donation box at Hannaford in Bar Harbor.
Maine Seacoast Mission: We support the MSM Christmas project when we donate unwrapped gifts to the mission. We also support the staff at the mission during November and December, as more than 15,000 gifts are sorted and readied for distribution to hundreds of recipients in Hancock and Washington Counties, and on the outer islands.
Traditionally, the Outreach Board manages the Island-wide Thanksgiving Basket Drive in coordination with the Bar Harbor and Westside Food Pantries, to support our neighbors who might not otherwise be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner. Food is collected by area churches, schools, and banks. It is collected and sorted, and packaged in boxes and bags that have been decorated by school children. Monetary donations make it possible to purchase turkeys and hams. This project involves dozens of community volunteers. Each year, the Thanksgiving Basket project helps more than 225 families on MDI.
During this past winter, we supported two local community activities. We baked and hosted Coffee’s On at the Maine Seacoast Mission. This coffee house was held twice a month, November through April, from 9:30 – 11:30 AM at the mission on West St. in Bar Harbor. We also helped with set-up and food preparation for a Saturday night family dinner at the Common Good Soup Kitchen’s “Cabin Fever Night.” We look forward to continuing to support both of these activities next winter as well.
The Board of Outreach consists of six members, with no minimum number of Covenant Members required. Two members shall be elected at each Annual Meeting of the Church. Members of the board serve for three years, renewable for another term of three years.
