Mission: Haiti 2016 – Updates

“BHUCC Friends of Haiti” will hold its first meeting on June 26 at 11:30 AM at the church.

This committee is open to anyone in the greater MDI community who is interested in helping the people of Haiti. Join us as we explore a Haiti Partnership!

Stemming from the enthusiasm of our mission team which spent a week in Haiti this past winter, we’ve begun to explore ways to continue our relationship with Institution Univers (the K-13 school) and COCINA (the U.S.-based nonprofit partner) to support the amazing work they’re doing in this Haitian community.

Meet Richelcie Felix and Shenay-Love Mondestin, our summer visitors from Haiti!

Meet Richelcie Felix and Shenay-Love Mondestin, our summer visitors from Haiti!

As part of this exploration, we’ve decided to host two of IU’s top 10th grade students, Richelcie Felix and Shenay-Love Mondestin, for two weeks in August.  Our church can welcome them and offer them opportunities to learn about American culture and to gain confidence in their English skills.  We’ll learn more about them soon!

HAITIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS SALE – AUGUST 13 Haiti_art_sale
Bar Harbor UCC parking lot, 29 Mt. Desert Street
10am to dusk

We’ll have a wonderful collection of Haitian arts and crafts for sale.
All proceeds return to Haiti from supporting the artists in Haiti, a school in Figaro, Haiti
as well as our own BHUCC Haiti outreach projects including hosting 2 students in August this year.

We’re also talking about other summer fundraisers: a lobster bake at the Mt Desert Campground, among others.  And we’re discussing when the next mission team might go to Haiti!

If you’re interested in working to help the people of Haiti, you’re invited!  Stay tuned for more information.

BREAKING NEWS: The members of the Haiti Mission Team will be commissioned on Sunday, February 21st during 10 AM worship. This is a special event in the life of our congregation as we dedicate ourselves to the support, encouragement, and prayerfulness for our mission team. The thirteen participants from our church will depart for Haiti on February 26 and will return on March 7.

The projects planned in Haiti include English camp and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation classes for the students in the upper grades; painting five classrooms; and classroom visitations to teach songs and games. More importantly, the team members will participate in worship and many other activities in the Institution Univers community. God bless you as you encounter the unexpected.

Our Mission Trippers’ next meeting is Saturday December 5 at church, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Please make ever effort to attend this important meeting.

Singing Rooster Coffee sales continue to be brisk. As we approach the holidays, we will have special gift bags available so that you can give coffee as Christmas and holiday gifts and hostess gifts. What a great stocking stuffer idea, too! We’ll be selling this wonderful Haitian coffee at our church’s Christmas Fair, too.

THANK YOU to Robin Barron for the AMAZING job she did planning, shopping, and cooking for our September Caribbean Dinner and Festival! We SO appreciate all of your efforts, Robin. Your generosity is overwhelming — we raised more than $800! That will cover two mission trippers’ room and board while in Ouanaminthe.

The two LOBSTER DINNERS we held in August at the Mt. Desert Campground were a HUGE success! Thanks to many local businesses for their generous donations: Mainely Meats, Thurston’s Lobster Pound, Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, Quietside Cafe and Ice Cream Shop, Gringo’s, Hannaford Supermarket in Bar Harbor, Cas Ole Catering, and the Mt. Desert Campground! We raised nearly $1800 which will cover room and board at the mission in Haiti for FOUR travelers (plus some). Woo-hoot! Thanks to all of you who volunteered so enthusiastically. You made ALL the difference!

We are very excited that our international mission trip to Haiti is planned for February 27, 2016 – March 6, 2016. We will be traveling to the community of Ouanaminthe (wanna mint?), Haiti and will support the Haiti Cocina mission there. We currently have nearly 20 folks hoping to travel and will need support from the entire church family both spiritually and financially. If you would like to learn more at any time, please contact Kathe Simons 244-3207, email kathe@simonshome.org or Marti Torbeck at 522-8710, e-mail mmtreehouse4@gmail.com.

MEETINGS
Each individual intending to travel MUST attend one of two meetings: Sunday August 16 at 11:30 AM (after church) or Monday, August 17 at 6 PM (in the church parlor). At that time, you will be given new detailed information about the trip, AND we will distribute two important documents, a liability waiver and a letter of intent to travel. You will need to sign both (keep copies for yourself) and return them to the church office in a sealed envelope no later than 2 PM on Monday, August 24. (If for some important reason or emergency, you cannot attend either session, please contact co-leader Marti Torbeck ASAP at 522-8710.

On Friday evening, October 30 and Saturday morning, October 31 (Happy Halloween!) we will host a team-building retreat for all travelers including our co-travelers from Falmouth, Maine. Co-leaders Marti Torbeck and Becky Pride will not only share more information about what we’ll actually be doing, but also form training teams for the activities we’ll be doing in Haiti. This is a required activity.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT and FUNDRAISING
Currently we are fundraising with a goal of $400 per person (to cover mission room and board). On the letter of intent form, please indicate if you will use this $400 AND if you anticipate needing additional financial support to travel. We do NOT want anyone to have to forego the trip because of the expense. These responses will have a direct effect our fundraising goals. Every participant is expected to participate fully in as many fundraising activities as possible.

Participants have the following fundraisers planned or in the works. Get involved! Contact the chair! How can you help?
EVERY SUNDAY during coffee hour: Haitian bagged coffee sales. Set up just before church, sell during coffee hour, get cash to Kathe Simons for deposit.

Saturday, September 26 – Haiti Community Supper 5:30 meal; 1:30 – whole team decorates and cooks together at church! Chair: Robin Ann Barron 422-0986
Other upcoming events:
